The U.S. government shutdown which started on October 1, 2025 has left many federal workers furloughed throughout the nation. Some workers, such as TSA and air traffic controllers, are considered essential and must continue to work despite not receiving a paycheck. Even still, airports are seeing staffing shortages. Parents can no longer afford daycare, and commuters can no longer afford gas. Flights are being delayed and, in some instances, cancelled. Here at the Southwest Georgia Regional Airport, we have not seen such shortages, thankfully. Our air traffic controllers are contracted and are receiving pay. Our TSA officers, however, are not.
Even though they are not being paid, our TSA officers are still showing up for their scheduled shifts with a smile on their faces. The financial strain is still there, so on October 17, 2025, the community has banded together to provide a meal each day for TSA. Restaurant owners, food trucks, and even regular community members have been donating meals, making sure that the officers can at least have something to eat. There have even been passengers who have shown up early for their flights with treats to lift the officers' spirits. The support has been overwhelming and the officers have been so appreciative of everyone who has participates in this effort. They have been working to provide safe and efficient air travel for our community, and the community is starting to give back in a big way.
This community effort's goal is to keep feeding the officers throughout the duration of the shutdown. It may not pay their bills, but it can provide encouragement and support on days when it can be hard to "keep going." If you'd like to find out how you can participate, please call the administration office at (229) 302-1501 and ask for Hillary. She is coordinating pickups and deliveries for TSA and will be happy to answer any questions you may have. Don't forget to check our Facebook page for the most up to date information and donors!
