Chief Presented the Safe Community Strategic Plan
Chief Persley presented the Safe City Coalition (SCC) Safe Community Strategic Plan to the City Commissioners in the meeting this evening. The purpose of the
SCC is to support the City of Albany’s efforts to fight crime and promote a safe community.
Mayor Dorothy Hubbard stated, “It was heartwarming to see how people stepped up to the plate to address the needs of the community.” The Mayor further thanked Commissioners, the Chief and the coalition for all of their support. It was a collaborative effort which was headed by Mayor Hubbard and Chief Persley. The coalition members were from local law enforcement agencies, the City Attorney, the City Manager and other stakeholders in the community. The group developed five focus areas which are listed below.
▪ Focus Area 1: Increasing Access to Social Services
▪ Focus Area 2: Promoting Law Enforcement Effectiveness
▪ Focus Area 3: Leveraging Technology
▪ Focus Area 4: Prosecutorial and Judiciary Innovation
▪ Focus Area 5: Increasing Community Involvement
Michael Persley, Chief of Police stated, “Crime is a challenge that every city, state and nation faces. Albany is not immune; in 2017, the City of Albany experienced an increase in violent crimes. The majority of the crimes were domestic-related or incidents involving acquaintances. However, the crimes were alarming and shook the consciousness of the community. Consequently, the Mayor responded with a call of action against crime forming the Safe City Coalition to address the perception of safety in the City of Albany.”
